The ice hockey team finished off a strong season with a record of 8-5-3 with a 4-0 loss to the Walter Johnson Wildcats, ending its playoff run.
With 11:15 remaining in the first period, Walter Johnson’s Jon Orlich scored to give the Wildcats an early lead. Five minutes later, brother Drew Orlich netted a goal of his own to stretch the lead to 2-0 after one period.
The second period was more of the same, with Walter Johnson continuing to dominate in the Viking’s zone. Just a few minutes into the period, Jon Orlich scored another goal to widen the lead. As the Vikes’ started to see the game slip away from their reach, WJ continued to penetrate on offense. With 9:53 left in the second, Wildcat Ty Glover scored to give Walter Johnson the 4-0 lead.
After a break before the third period while the Zamboni smoothed the ice, the Vikings cranked up the intensity and came out creating several chances on goal but Walter Johnson goaltender Ben Perone maintained his shutout.
This was the last game for seniors Lucas Karron, JM Hellman, Dustin Gray, Colin Rankin and Lawson Hamilton. With many talented rising seniors and the addition of rising freshman coming to Whitman, the prospective ice hockey team shows a lot of potential to go far next season.
