The boys soccer team pulled out a tough win Oct. 5, beating the 6-2-2 Richard Montgomery Rockets 1-0 and improving its record to 7-1.
The Vikes had their work cut out for them, as they hadn’t had any success against the Rockets in recent years.
“We hadn’t beaten them or even scored a goal against them in four years,” defender Ed Smith said. “So we wanted to come out strong and put a lot of pressure on them.”
Whitman controlled the game in the first half, stringing passes together and getting shots on goal. The team was in the Rockets’ half of the field for most of the first half, and its work finally paid off with a minute left before the break.
Forward Kourosh Ashtary-Yazdi caught the opposing goalie off of his lane, and let a shot fly over him from 36 yards out, scoring the only goal of the game.
The Rockets didn’t back down, however, coming out strong and threatening to score in the second half. But the Viking defense held on, securing the team’s seventh win of the season.
The Vikes look to win their third straight game Oct. 8 when they take on the 7-1-1 Wootton Patriots away.
