This fall, the football team looks to rebound from a disappointing 5-5 season in which it didn’t qualify for playoffs for the first time in two years.
Look for the Vikings to be a run-first offense, with running back Zac Morton leading the charge, along with running back John Sullivan’s support.
For the second year in a row, the team converted a skill-position player to quarterback to accommodate the spread-option offense. Ultimately, head coach Jim Kuhn chose former wide receiver Kevin McGowan for the job.
“Kevin has done an unreal job with the transformation to QB,” Morton said. “All the players and coaches are extremely confident in him.”
The defense returns the majority of its starters and looks to improve its performance this season. The premier unit on defense is on the defensive line, with each player weighing in at over 225 pounds. Anchored by defensive end Nick Sobczyk, the Vikings will constantly be able to put pressure on the opposing quarterback.
“Defense is definitely a strength this year,” defensive tackle Mark Hunley said. “We should be very tough to score on.”
Big games for the Vikes include match-ups against divisional rivals Churchill Sept 7 and B-CC Sept 29 as well as what should be a showdown with the Quince Orchard Cougars Oct 15.
The team hopes to start the season off with a win when it takes on the Wootton Patriots at home this Friday at 7.
