The baseball team beat the 14-7 B-CC Barons 8-1 May 17 in the regional semifinals, advancing to the regional finals where they will face the 13-6 Northwest Jaguars.
Led by pitcher Michael Flack and flawless defense from the rest of the team, the Vikings avenged their regular season loss to the Barons, one of only two losses during the team’s historic season.
The game started off slow, with a pitcher’s duel taking place between Flack and Barons’ pitcher Nico Narel-Aguilar. As a result, the Vikings only managed score one run until the fourth inning, when designated hitter Dan Duffy blasted a grand slam over the 345-foot center field fence. Duffy’s third homerun, the highest number of any player, and first grand slam put the Vikings up 5-0, and they never looked back.
The team’s momentum carried over into the fifth inning, as short stop Patrick Hisle ripped a triple into right-center field. Centerfielder Drew Aherne, coming off a 4-4 night against Gaithersburg, drove Hisle home with a double down the left field line, making the score 7-0. Second basemen Sam Avayou capped the team’s scoring with a single to right field, bringing in outfielder Ryan McGill for the team’s last run.
In the sixth inning, Flack allowed a single to center, but then struck out right fielder Davon Williams. Flack’s pitching, followed by a great play from Hisle on a hit by Narel-Aguillar ended the inning, keeping BCC scoreless.
After a five-run ninth inning against Gaithersburg the night before, fans worries of another comeback were expunged as Flack threw his ninth strikeout of the game in the top of the ninth inning. Flack’s four-hitter sent the team to Whitman’s first regional final in three years.
“It was a great win, particularly because BCC beat us in the regular season,” Hisle said. “We really wanted to prove that we’re the best.”
