One of the most consistently prolific and prominent rappers of recent times, emcee Freddie Gibbs, from Gary, Indiana, has released a well-crafted mixtape, “Cold Day in Hell,” on Halloween.
Although he usually releases his mixtapes to little mainstream applause, the Midwestern rapper has been an underground legend in the hip-hop scene for many years. But with this new release, Gibbs is finally getting some recognition from big name rappers like Juicy J and Curren$y. Gibbs teamed up with some of hip-hop’s best producers including Dom Kennedy and Big K.R.I.T. to produce beats that complement his Midwestern style well. The mixtape features many guest stars including, Young Jeezy and Dom Kennedy and is funded by clothing company and Gibbs’ sponsor, Lifted Research Group.
All 16 tracks are reminiscent of the early ‘90s rap Gibbs is known for. Tracks such as “187 Proof” and “Heaven Can Wait” exemplify Gibbs’ incredibly smooth and confident flow and rhyming style. “Anything To Survive” is an example Gibb’s acclaimed stories of street life. Gibbs shows his versatility by rapping over an array of beats from different styles.
Expect much more from Gibbs in the future, since he just signed a deal with Young Jeezy’s CTE Records and a full-length album is set to hit the market later this year.
Overall, through this new music, Freddie Gibbs stayed true to his gritty, street lyrics and released yet another great mixtape.
