‘Tototown’ website revolutionizes school fundraising

Forget bake sales and restaurant night. School clubs are revolutionizing the way they fundraise with a new website called TotoTown.

The website is an offshoot of Toto Communications, Inc., a wireless phone and Internet service company based in Bethesda. Anyone can create an account at www.tototown.com to browse and purchase deals and discounts from local businesses. TotoTown donates a portion of the profit from each coupon sale to a local club or organization of the purchaser’s choice.

Toto Communications CEO Jim Cannon, who is married to special education teacher Laurie Safran, hopes the company will help students participate in extracurricular activities without struggling to raise money.

“Last summer, my wife and I took a group of Whitman students to Uganda, which turned out to be a life-changing event for many of them,” Cannon said. “I want that kind of experience to be available to kids, but I don’t want them to have to jeopardize their schoolwork to raise the money needed.  So we came up with a solution that lets everyone win.”

TotoTown only offers deals for Bethesda businesses, but the company is looking to expand, Cannon said. Organizations that register as beneficiaries, or PonPals, get 20 percent of the price of a sold coupon, while the business selling the coupon gets 50 percent. TotoTown pockets 30 percent of the revenue from each coupon. So far, the business has donated about $175 to various PonPals around Bethesda.

The crew team, PTSA, tech crew and It’s Academic team now use TotoTown for fundraising.

Drama producer Daniel Levine said he is eager to see how TotoTown will affect the tech crew’s fundraising ability, but acknowledges that the website is in the early stages of development.

The company began planning the TotoTown software in December 2010. The site went live for coupon sales in late August and has sold about 120 coupons to 18 different companies so far. Cannon expects 5,000 TotoTown members by the end of October, which he said would equal about 200 coupon sales a day.

No matter how many coupon sales TotoTown gets, Toto Communications is pleased to be able to help the community, Cannon said.

“We would love to enable the works of PTAs, schools and nonprofits all over the country and perhaps even raise $1 million per month to help these organizations do what they do best,” he said. “At the end of the day, it’s all about how many people you have touched in a positive way.”
