The girls lacrosse team (8–5) crushed Churchill (6–7) 12–7 Wednesday night, advancing in the playoffs.
Whitman started the game off with a goal by senior Keira Robinson, but Churchill soon followed with a goal of their own, tying the game. Nonetheless, senior Corinne Armstrong followed with two more goals, dodging Churchill’s defense in the crease.
In the second quarter, the Vikes came out with outstanding passing, delivering lots of assists. The offense dominated, securing the game with seven goals against the Bulldogs, with freshman Keira Carpenter scoring a hat-trick. At the same time, the Vikings’ defense was outstanding, forcing multiple turnovers in front of the box and crushing Churchill’s attacks. Even when the ball wasn’t in the crease, Whitman’s defense pressured hard, cornering the Bulldogs on the side, trapping the ball, and taking it straight up the field.
In the second half of the game, Whitman remained confident. The two teams faced off, possession going back and forth. Whitman’s goalie, freshman Meryl Wiener, shone with countless saves, resulting in Whitman’s winning score of 12–7.
They will next play in the regional semifinal on Friday, May 8th, away at Walter Johnson at 5 p.m.
