The Whitman Student Government Association hosted its fourth annual Career Day in the commons Jan. 8 and 9. Whitman community members shared two-minute highlights about their professional experiences.
On Thursday during periods two and three, speakers discussed their occupations in politics, real estate, occupational therapy, environmental science, media relations, the military, journalism and medical anthropology. On Friday during periods four and five, speakers spoke about their professions in meteorology, economics, communications, law, banking, health consulting and story production.
Maryland state Del. Marc Korman talked about his path to the Maryland House of Delegates. Korman attended law school before being elected to office in 2014 and currently works as an attorney in Washington, D.C.
“To get my position as a state legislator, I had to interview with tens of thousands of people — going door-to-door, emailing people, calling people and asking for support,” Korman said.
Some teachers brought their classes to the event, while other students attended individually by obtaining a permission slip and teacher approval.
Daniel Kwiatkowski, a U.S. Navy commander specializing in intelligence, also spoke at the event. He joined the Navy through ROTC, a dual curriculum program that trains college students for the armed forces while earning a degree. Kwiatkowski has served for 30 years, with 15 of those spent overseas.
“I wanted to make a difference,” Kwiatkowski said. “And I wanted to give back to society.”
After the speeches, students could approach speakers individually to ask questions. Sophomore Gabriela Noya attended and said she found the speakers very engaging.
“A lot of them had stories about how they did something and then they found their true passion,” Noya said. “It made you feel like it’s okay to not know exactly what you want to do.”
