The girls soccer (7–1) team squeaks out a narrow 1-0 against the Bethesda Chevy-Chase Barons (6–2) in the Battle of Bethesda.
The story of this game was physicality. The two teams played with lots of energy and brought out the rivalry. Although the score only ended at 1–0, the Vikes controlled the game, having many opportunities and keeping the ball on the opposing side. The game was scoreless for almost the entirety of the game, with the only options for BCC coming from corner kicks.
On the other hand, Whitman had many chances to score but had trouble capitalizing on their opportunities. In the game’s final minutes, the Vikes finally found the back of the net with a goal from senior Riley Demartino. With the game at 0–0, sophomore outside back Aliya Wales played a perfect clearance over the top where Demartino ran the ball down and chipped the ball over the keeper’s head into the net to score the game-winning goal.
“I just knew we had to stay composed and pop it in so we could win,” Demartino said.
This Thursday, the Vikes face off against the Wooton Patriots (6–3) on senior night and hope to keep up their dominant win streak.
