The girls soccer team (5–1) defeated the Winston Churchill Bulldogs (2–4–1) 1–0 with an overtime goal after a scoreless regulation.
Although the score might not show it, the Vikes dominated this game. Churchill rarely had possession of the ball and didn’t advance it past midfield many times. Even with a strong defense, Whitman still struggles with executing a proper goal.
After 80 minutes of scoreless soccer, the game went into overtime, where the first to score wins. Based on how the Vikes dominated possession, it was clear Whitman could easily walk away with the win — that’s precisely what the Vikes did. Shortly after overtime started, junior Reńee Miller scored an astonishing goal assisted by senior Isabella Fezza. Fezza lofted the ball over the defense for Miller to track it down and squeezed it past the goalie to hit the bottom left of the net.
Miller knew the team had to step up in overtime and knew she had to take every opportunity she had to hit the back of the net.
“It was overtime, so we knew we had to lock in and put a goat away,” Miller said. “(Fezza) laid an amazing ball from behind. It was me, the ball and the keeper.”
The Vikes came out on top and hope to secure another win this Friday against the Montgomery Blair Blazers (9–0).
