Scrolling through Instagram or Facebook, you’re likely to see countless homecoming proposal pictures, filled with creative puns and elaborate posters. But this year you might see something a little different: student government tagged in the post.

Whitman SGA announced a contest for homecoming proposals, with winners being awarded $200 to pay for concert tickets.

To enter, one simply has to post their homecoming ask on social media and tag Whitman SGA. The winner will be randomly selected at the dance.

“I think we’re really impressed with the amount of people that have actually participated in it,” senior leadership member Keara Sullivan said. “Because once you let people know that you can just tag Whitman SGA, and you have a chance to win something as cool as concert tickets, then a lot of people try to participate.”

Students must actually attend the homecoming dance to collect their prize. The entire contest is part of leadership’s effort to revamp the homecoming dance this year and ultimately make it more enjoyable for students.

“This year, we’ve really taken homecoming in a slightly different direction,” junior leadership member Elliot Kelly said. “We’re trying a bunch of new things like food trucks, the ask contest as well as just making the dance more fun, so hopefully that will have a long-term impact where people realize the dance is actually a lot of fun and they’ll start going consistently.”
