Boys Soccer Upsets Dematha 2–1

By Kyle Layman

The boys soccer team (2–0) opened the season with its second consecutive win, upsetting the Washington Post’s top-seeded Dematha Stags 2–1. This victory came after the team beat the Georgetown Prep Hoyas on Friday night.
The Vikes were unfazed by the competition, and were on the attack as soon as the game began.

“We made sure to pressure them from the start of game,” forward Adam Deutchman said. “They weren’t ready for us and we scored within the first three minutes. They don’t usually get behind in games so we wanted to see how they would react to the high pressure.”

After the first goal, the team kept up the pressure, and scored again. As the game came to a close, the Stags put everything they had into their offense and the Vikes changed their formation in response.

“Our coach had a smart idea and switched our formation from a 4-3-3 to a 4-4-2,” Deutchman said. “This gave us more midfielders so we could defend better in the middle and counter attack to keep them off balance.”

The Stags were able to score one goal, but the Vikes managed to hold on to secure the 2–1 victory.

The squad was led by Deutchman and forward Andreas Djurhuus who both contributed a goal, and goalkeeper Evan Cameron who had five saves.

The team’s next game is away against the Quince Orchard Cougars Thursday.
