SGA presidents and class officers elected

After a week filled with colorful posters, passionate speeches and invites to multiple Facebook groups, students voted for their respective class presidents and officers during English classes today. The results of the vote were announced after school via Facebook.

Rising sophomores elected Azraf Khan to be their class president and Celia Shapiro and Shehrez Chaudri to be class officers. Rising juniors voted Ray Crist for president, with Clara Ryan and Caleb Kim as officers. Rising seniors elected Jaiwen Hsu as president, with Carly Choppin and Annie Waye as officers.

The majority of today’s winners have previously served in the leadership class. Hsu has been class president since his sophomore year and is thrilled to continue to make a difference, especially by expanding Walk Away Cancer, the event he created two years ago, he said.

Waye, who was this year’s junior class officer, will continue to work with Hsu. She is ready to once again take on the responsibility, she said.

“I am really excited to be involved in next year’s senior picnic, prom and graduation,” Waye said. “We will work closely with Mr. Michaels to make sure all the expected senior events run smoothly.”

Also returning to the SGA, Crist’s main goal is to create a higher attendance rate at homecoming.

“There’s so much stigma about the Homecoming dance as being a lame event nobody goes to,” Crist said. “I want to add new features like desserts and photo booths to the dance to get more people to go because I’ve seen at other schools it’s a really great event.”

Next year’s Leadership class as a whole is excited to spend another year improving the school as a part of Leadership.

“The Whitman community is amazing and I’ve had so much fun at all of the events this year,” Shapiro said. “I want to make it even better for my class in years to come.”
