The baseball team (4–1) lost their first game of the season after being outlasted 5–4 by the Walter Johnson Wildcats (6–1) in extra innings.

The two teams were evenly matched, exchanging runs until the very end, when the Wildcats won on a walk off single in the the 8th inning.

Pitcher Max Palermo started the game and pitched five innings holding the Wildcats to three runs, but the Vikes were never able to break the Wildcats defense and build momentum offensively.

“I think you have to give credit to Walter Johnson, they definitely played well,” Palermo said. “I think we just didn’t get the spark we needed to break it open.”

The team’s offense was lead by outfielders Danny Mills and Tyler Hwang who had multiple hits, but it wasn’t enough to secure a victory.

Throughout the game, both teams scored timely runs preventing anyone from building a lead, but in the end Whitman was unable to pull of a win.

“We came up with some clutch hits in the 5th and 7th. Honestly, the game could have gone either way, we just ended up on the wrong side of it,” Outfielder Eric Wayman said.

Catcher Robert Kraff noted the small mistakes that cost them the game.

“Errors on wild pitches and some other mistakes lead to two unearned runs for them,” Kraff said.

The Vikes are taking on rival BCC this Wednesday at 3:45.
