The field hockey team outlasted the Richard Montgomery Rockets 2–1 on Friday night in overtime, now boasting an impressive 4–1 record on the season.
The game started off back and forth, with neither team putting any points on the board. The deadlock ended shortly before halftime when forward Ellie Gill bulleted one to the back of the goal, giving the Vikes the edge.
RM didn’t take long to respond, scoring within the first few minutes of the second half.
The two teams dueled the rest of the second half out until the whistle blew and the game headed into overtime tied 1–1.
Overtime in field hockey is a 10-minute sudden death, winner-take-all.
About a minute into overtime, Whitman committed a stroke penalty, which gave RM a free shot on goal. But goalie Cami Stenger was able to smother the shot, swatting it away from the goal.
Later in the overtime, RM received a stroke penalty, which then allowed forward Rachel Berman to blast the game winning goal. Berman’s goal, her first of the season, clinched the 2–1 victory for the Vikes.
Berman missed on a stroke last game against WJ, so she was especially anxious to score this time around.
“When I took this stroke, and it was the deciding factor of whether or not we won—I wanted to redeem myself,” Berman said.
An overtime victory was huge for the team, providing momentum moving forward towards the postseason.
“It’s always exciting to win in overtime because everything is sudden death and it can be very intense,” Stenger said. “Everyone worked hard and pushed each other so we could win.”
The Vikes will play away against the Churchill Bulldogs Monday at 5:45.
