Softball closes out regular season with 8–5 victory over NCS

Softball took down the National Cathedral Eagles, 8–5 Monday. The Vikes’ regular season ended with momentum: they finished a three-game winning streak and ended the season 8–7.

The contest was continued from Thursday, as hard rain had postponed the game until Monday. The Eagles took a 2–0 lead early, but the good luck didn’t continue for the visitors.

Shortstop Elena Kozak and pitcher Lauren Furst led the Vikes, as Kozak stole home twice, capitalizing on errant pitches. Furst kept steady, only allowing one run after the game started back up and throwing seven strikeouts.

Although Kozak and Furst continued to lead the team, coach Anne Marie O’Donoghue cited hot bats as a major cause of the comeback.

“All around, I thought we played really well: great defense, Lauren Furst did a great job, but it was up at bat,” she said. “The bottom of our lineup stepped up and got hits when we needed them, getting runners home, then the hits became contagious and everybody started hitting.”

The Vikes hope to continue their streak into the playoffs later this week.

Don’t forget senior Olivia Weals’ fabulous home run. It was one of the best hits of the season.
