Coed volleyball overpowers B-CC 3–0

The coed volleyball team crushed the B-CC Barons 3–0 Tuesday at home, despite over a week without practice due to spring break.

The game started off evenly matched, but as the first set progressed the Vikes emerged with the upper hand, and were able to take advantage of the Baron’s shaky defense. After impressive offensive plays by outside hitters Riley Shaver and Matt McClanahan, the Vikings triumphed 25–9.

“Matt McClanahan had one of the best games he’s had all season,” coach Elizabeth Keating said, “so that was fantastic.”

The Vikes loosened their defense during the second and third sets, however, allowing the Barons to score 17 and 13 points, respectively. Despite the win, the team is hoping to tighten up their play for the rest of the season.

“A lot of the points that we lost were stupid mistakes,” setter Hanalei Fong said.

“It’s nice that we won,” Keating agreed. “But it was a little bit sloppy.”

The Vikings will take on the Magruder Colonels Thursday at Magruder, following a special ceremony for the Schaefer family.

“We are going to be honoring coach Schaefer, who was the co-ed coach last year and couldn’t be the coach this year since his wife passed away. We’re going to be honoring him and his family at her home school; his wife Denise was a counselor at Magruder,” Keating said.
