Football defeats Springbrook 23-22 on last-minute field goal

Battling through sloppy and wet conditions, running back Jacob Pitsenberger led the Vikings to a dramatic 23-22 win over the Springbrook Blue Devils, improving their record to 3-4.

Due to adverse conditions, the Vikes kept their game plan simple and ran the ball down the Blue Devils’ throat.

Pitsenberger was the star of the night, rushing for 128 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries.  In addition, he scored a third touchdown by blocking and returning a punt early in the first quarter.

“It was the most exciting game of my three year Whitman career,” tight end Anton Casey said.

The Vikings trailed 8-7 after the first quarter and 14-7 at halftime.

After tying the game at 14 on the first drive of the second half, the Vikings traded touchdowns with the Blue Devils, leaving them behind at 22-20 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Both teams struggled offensively for most of the fourth quarter, but the Vikings finally got going late.

With under a minute left, quarterback Evan Smith found receiver Nolan Hanessian for a 50 yard gain on his only reception of the night. The catch set up the game-winning field goal by kicker Jonah Brain with just under 30 seconds remaining.

“I was ecstatic and just appreciated [Brain] so much,” Casey said.

The Vikings will look to get back to .500 when they face off with the 0-7 Walter Johnson Wildcats next Friday.
