“The Drop” starring Tom Hardy, James Gandolfini and Noomi Rapace gets the fall movie season off to an exciting and action-packed start.
The film follows Bob Saginowski (Hardy), a lonely Brooklyn bartender who participates in funneling illegal cash to gangsters through bars. This process, known as a money drop, lends itself to the movie title. The film also intertwines a plot with a Pit Bull that Bob and Nadia (Rapace) rescue from a trashcan and nurse back to health.
“The Drop” is Gandolfini’s final film appearance, as the actor passed away in the summer of 2013 due to a heart attack. As usual, Gandolfini does a terrific job acting, even channeling his inner Tony Soprano in his portrayal of Marv, Bob’s heavy-handed boss and cousin who facilitates many of the drops.
At only 106 minutes, “The Drop” is extremely fast paced, never letting up or leaving viewers a dull moment. Despite a slightly ambiguous ending, audience members will leave the theater satisfied with the film as a whole.
The film’s one major flaw is that the story is slightly hard to follow, with viewers having to give 100% of their focus to keep up with what’s going on. “The Drop” also benefits from an amazingly written script, with nearly every piece of dialogue lending itself to the overarching plot of the movie.
However, viewer be warned, “The Drop” is a pretty graphic movie with some parts of the movie turning rather grisly and gory.
With the spectacular talent of the late James Gandolfini, a fantastically written script and many moments that will keep you on the edge of your seat, “The Drop” is definitely worth a trip to the theater this fall.
