The golf team ended its season with a seventh place finish in the two-day state championship at the University of Maryland, Oct. 28 and 31.
Monday, the team was led by Captain Andrew Barth and freshman Graham Hutchinson, both shooting a 78, with the team shooting a combined score of 334. This qualified the team for the Wednesday match, along with Churchill, Wootton and Walter Johnson.
Whitman entered Wednesday at a disadvantage, being 16 shots behind Churchill, who had a four shot lead. Despite this, Whitman finished strongly, shooting a combined score of 648 over the two days, with Barth finishing his Whitman career with score of 70.
Wootton won the state championship by shooting a combined 633 throughout the two days.
The tournament also marked the end of seniors Barth and Daniel Stern’s Whitman golf careers.
“It was a little bit sad when the last putt went in, but I’m just happy I was able to participate,” Stern said. “It’s a great sport and a great team, and I had a lot of fun out there.”
