The girls soccer team concluded its regular season on a high note with a 1-0 win against the 9-2-2 National Cathedral Eagles Oct. 22.

Senior Night decorations ordained the fence around the field, including colorful posters and picture collages commemorating each of the seven seniors. As each senior walked onto the field with her parents, juniors on the team read speeches honoring them for their leadership on and off the field.

“It was a nice little touch to talk about how much the seniors meant to the girls,” coach GregHerbert said. “It was a really big game for our girls and they really wanted to play well for their seniors.”

Both teams came out ready to battle, but the Vikes offense was relentless, constantly pressuring the Eagles’ defense.

Within the last two minutes of the first half, midfielder Michelle Innerarity got possession of the ball at midfield and sent it to the right flank where she found the feet of forward Clare Severe, who took a powerful shot that hit the far post of the goal. Midfielder Maddie Parker recovered the rebound and scored with an easy finish, putting the first and only goal of the game on the scoreboard.

The second half resumed with even more intensity than the first. While the Eagles gained momentum on offense, the Vikes’ defensive line and goalkeeper Erin McClanahan collaboratively continued to protect the goal, shutting out the opponents and emerging victorious.

“Our girls were really excited and played with a lot of passion and energy,” Herbert said.

As the third seed after the regular season, the Vikes have a bye for the first round of playoffs and are scheduled to play the 7-5-1 Churchill Bulldogs in their first game Oct. 30 at home.
