Four seniors in lunchtime car crash, no one injured

Four senior boys were involved in a two-car accident at the intersection of Pyle Road and River Road Oct. 16. They were returning to school at the end of sixth-period lunch when their truck was hit by an oncoming car. No one was injured.

The students were turning left from Pyle Road onto River when an oncoming Mercedes hit the bed of their small pick-up truck, causing the truck to spin, said assistant principal Brandi Heckert, who arrived on the scene along with principal Alan Goodwin and police. The Mercedes’ air bag deployed. Neither vehicle was drivable after the accident, and both were towed.

Goodwin has twice lobbied state officials to get a traffic light installed at the intersection, most recently in 2009, he said. Officials denied the requests, citing the $250,000 to $300,ooo expense, the fear that more accidents would arise with drivers bumping into cars stopped at the light, the absence of any history of fatalities and the resistance of local residents, Goodwin said.

“I think it’s worth revisiting, and I would be glad to support a coalition to try to get a light there,” he said. “I think it’s needed.”

The police determined that the student driver was at fault for failing to yield when crossing over lanes of traffic, Heckert said. She cautions students to be careful while driving, especially when they’re in a rush.

“It’s a scary intersection when kids are racing back from lunch,” she said.

Instead of a traffic light how about keeping students on campus? There is no reason that they need to be racing around the area doing stupid stuff which ends in a wreck like this.

    Goodwin has a short memory.

Heck, if a traffic light is that cheap I’ll pay for it.
