Every year, the drama club sits down and discusses a very important topic: Cappie Awards nominations. The club president has to present the two productions being performed that year to the group, and the club takes a vote.
This year, the club voted to nominate spring play, “Amadeus,” for the awards over upcoming musical, “Into the Woods.”
Director Christopher Gerken says that although Whitman typically nominates musicals for the awards, plays have been nominated in the past, including “Dracula” in 2008.
Although “Amadeus” is a play, the club wants to involve a pit orchestra and the chamber choir in the production because the storyline focuses on music.
“I suppose a determining factor for choosing ‘Amadeus’ could be my plans to include live music, both vocal and instrumental,” Gerken says.
Senior Sammy Zeisel, president of the drama club, says that the club voted for “Amadeus” because of the play’s difficult level.
“While ‘Into the Woods’ isn’t a piece of cake, ‘Amadeus’ is ridiculous for a high school to pull off,” Zeisel says. “But everyone knows we will.”
Zeisel is confident that “Amadeus” is the right choice to be put up for nomination.
“I expect that we’ll get nominated in at least a couple categories, if not many, because we’re awesome,” Zeisel says.
