Girls cross country out-paced by Richard Montgomery in season opener

The girls cross country team (0–1) faced Richard Montgomery in a dual meet on Tuesday at Redgate Park and fell just short of victory.

The girls had a bit of a rough start, getting stuck in the middle of the pack for the first mile. Leading the Vikes was sophomore Katie Greenwald, freshman Caroline Easley and senior Phoebe Dainer. Fellow seniors Kiara Chuang and Emilie Gros-Slovinska took on the task of pack running and ended up finishing the race with times of 23:53 and 24:24. Greenwald began to pull away from the Whitman pack and parked herself in the leading group, finishing with a time of 21:58 and second overall in the race.

With a final score of 28–29, the Vikes fell just one point short of first place, placing second behind Richard Montgomery. The Vikes will face Richard Montgomery again this Saturday at Bulls Run.

Sophomore Dani Widra hopes that the setback will prepare the team for their next race.

“Although it wasn’t the result we were hoping for,” Widra said. “We hope it will help us prepare for a good race on Saturday.”
