We take Visa, Mastercard or Library card? This is no mistake. Every Tuesday in October, customers could pay for meals at this Bethesda restaurant with a library card.

Shophouse Kitchen, a Southeast Asian restaurant that operates in an assembly line style, similar to its initial parent company, Chipotle, had run an October promotion when every Tuesday customers could receive a free meal by showing the cashier their library card.

The marketing strategist behind the promotion, Krista Ammirato, said she hopes it has attracted a wide market, including parents and students.

“I think students would be interested because students who don’t have a lot of money, they’re always looking out for the good deal,” junior Elliot Kelly said.

The offer is one of a few monthly promotions that Shophouse is implementing. For the month of November, Shophouse will provide free meals on Tuesdays for hotel employees.

Though an unusual promotion, the use of the library card to pay for a meal has attracted a wide variety of customers.

“The idea was to try to reach out to as many people that we could cover, whether it be a child, or a teenager, or even parents,” Bethesda Shophouse employee Travis Miller said. “So we managed to cover everything.”

The promotion has garnered attention for Shophouse, and even trended on Twitter.

“It’s definitely opened the doors to newer customers, people who have never even heard of Shophouse before,” Miller said. “It’s practically quadrupled our normal business, on a day-to-day basis.”
