Dozens of students shared the “KONY 2012” video on Facebook today, after the organization Invisible Children premiered the video online to raise awareness about Joseph Kony, who leads the Lord’s Resistance Army in central Africa and abducts children for child soldiers and sex slaves. The ultimate goal is Kony’s arrest by the end of this year.

I like the idea it’s just that there are many things about the Invisible Children organization that rub me the wrong way: 1. They have never been audited by an objective outside source and there are major discrepancies between the amount of money sent to Africa (about 38%)and how much they receive. 2. Joesph Kony and the LRA have not been a major threat in Uganda since 2006 with UN forces looking for him. 3. The organization has been working with local militias and governments whose human rights violations are also well known. Like in this article:http://www.boston.com/news/world/africa/articles/2012/03/09/anti_kony_video_campaign_draws_criticism_in_uganda/
TL;DR: Invisible Children has a good idea behind it but the facts have been somewhat distorted or embellished and it is not an entirely credible organization financially.

This is amazing. Everyone needs to get involved. We must stop Joseph Kony.

If anyone wants to make a difference for Invisible Children here at Whiman, join the Whitman Invisible Children Club! We have already raised about six hundred dollars this year and hope to raise even more! You can find us on facebook or by talking to me, or Natalie Andrasko.
