The boys’ soccer team defeated the Einstein Titans 3–2 in a thrilling comeback victory.
Whitman got off to a rocky start in the first half, conceding two goals to trail 2–0 at the break. Whitman was doing well to keep possession, but could not capitalize on any good opportunities to score. A rapid Einstein attack was able to counter-attack flawlessly and take the lead.
In the second half, everything changed. Whitman was a lot more energetic as a team, and with efficient pressing, seemed always to have the ball in Einstein’s half. Einstein’s keeper made many impressive saves, but it was clear a goal from the Vikes was coming. After junior Lucas Bloomberg had a long throw-in that landed in the Einstein penalty box, senior Ignacio Aguilar hammered it into the back of the net, and the score was 2–1. Whitman knew more work had to be done, and kept playing in a fast-paced manner in hopes of scoring an equalizer. After a sketchy slide tackle by an Einstein defender in their penalty box, Whitman had a penalty kick and a prime opportunity to tie the game. Aguilar stepped up for the Vikes and confidently shot it into the right side of the goal, tying the game. The two teams then fought it out for the rest of the half, and the game went into overtime tied 2–2.
In overtime, Whitman wasted no time. All of the momentum was already on their side, and after a cross into the box, sophomore Nuri Huang volleyed it past the Einstein goalkeeper, winning the game for the Vikes.
Whitman looks to carry this win streak into their next game as they play away at Northwest on Thursday, October 9, at 7:15 p.m.
