Whitman students, staff and fans convened in the bus loop on Friday to celebrate the beginning of the fall sports season. The kickoff event—organized by the SGA—started at 6:00 p.m. and ran until the first home game of the year against Blake High School at 7:00 p.m.
At the event, the SGA provided activities to get attendees excited, including spike ball, face paint and a live DJ. They also handed out free pizza and Capri Suns for students to enjoy.
SGA member Lila Sengezener said the SGA has been working to make the kickoff happen for weeks.
“We’ve been organizing this event since school started,” Sengezener said. “We’ve basically been planning everything that we need to order for all the events—from the games to catering the food.”
The night’s theme, “blue-out,” encouraged students to show off their school spirit. For those who didn’t come dressed in Whitman gear, organizers set up a spirit merchandise stand, selling Whitman hoodies, shirts, and pants.
Freshman Silvia Gomez said the SGA did a great job putting together this event, as it got her excited before the big game and allowed her to interact with fellow students.
“Whitman is such an inclusive place,” Gomez said. “Its very exciting and there’s lots of people here tonight so I hope we win.”
