Racing Into Fall: A Guide to Running Shoes

**By Andrew Carr Palmer**

In early fall of every year, many top running shoe companies come out with new shoes in addition to updating their most successful shoes from the previous year.  This year both asics and brooks, two major running shoe companies have come out with updates on some of the best selling models so far this fall.

Asics running has developed updates on their two most popular shoes this fall.  The 2150 is an update on their best selling model from last season, the 2140.  The 2150 has several small updates from the 2140 including slight updates in both the duomax foam on the inner arch which is designed to combat over-pronation as well as the shoes ability to fit more naturally around the foot.  Perhaps the most notable change to the new model is the half ounce weight decrease.  This is extremely difficult for a company to do while increasing the amount of stability offered.

Asics also has come out with an updated version of the gel Kayano.  The most recent version, the 16, is also supposed to be a more natural fit around your foot.  The shoe provides a more flexible foot bed, allowing for a more powerfully and springy push off.  Asics has also advanced the asymmetrical lacing system that was previously used on the Kayano.  The asymmetrical lacing is designed to hold the foot in its natural position while running as well as relieving pressure off of tendons on the top of the foot.

Brooks has also updated their top selling shoe, the Adrenaline, which is extremely similar to the Asics 2150.  The adrenaline has changed the material that is being used in the upper, allowing for increased breathability.  In addition the adrenaline has also added more dense foam to the shoe, allowing for increased stability in the heel and arch area.  The shoe is also more than half an ounce lighter.
