Football Edges Out Trojans

**By Juliet Mullins**

Varsity Football defeated the Gaithersburg Trojans 12-7, Oct 16, improving to 6-1 on the season.

The game started slowly with both teams being kept off the scoreboard in the opening quarter. However, the Vikes picked up their momentum in the second quarter and drove 54 yards in eight plays, ending in a touchdown by running back Kevin Cecala, and a missed extra point.

The Trojans followed minutes later with a touchdown and a successful extra point, giving them a half time lead of 7-6.

“It was a very slow game and a very close game,” wide receiver Larry Kline said. “Hopefully, this close score will really push us to prepare even better for the next games.”

Another sloppy win to an inferior opponent is just what the Vikings need to step up their game down the stretch

Even though many players returned from injury this week, the Vikings still had their first and second string centers out. Senior Danny Shannahan stepped into the position with no past experience, but luckily, Shannahan filled the position exceptionally well.

Next week, the Vikes will take on Springbrook at home in an effort to secure a playoff spot. The boys will then play two of their toughest opponents, Seneca Valley and Churchill, both away.

“We’re just trying to take it one game at a time,” head coach Jim Kuhn said. “I think we’re good enough to beat anybody, but bad enough to lose to anybody.”
