The softball team (9–10) fell to the B–CC Barons (12–6) 12–11 in a nailbiter division championship game Wednesday, ending their playoff run.

The Vikes went  down 7–0 after the first four innings, but they amped up their offensive intensity to stage a comeback. Catcher Margaret Oleynik and first baseman Katie Eichorn crushed doubles while designated hitter Charlotte McNulty hit a triple to bring the team to only a two run deficit heading into the sixth inning.

“Today we really came through at bat and we had some clutch hits as well as some fielding errors that helped us be successful offensively,” right fielder Arielle Klein said.

The Vikes also picked up their game defensively and only allowed two runs in the next few innings. Pitcher Riley Kuehn had multiple strikeouts and threw a hard curveball to stump the Barons. The outfielders responded to the Barons’ early lead with a triple play and a few caught pop flies.

Despite the offensive and defensive retaliation by the Vikes, they were unable to overcome to Barons’ lead, losing 12–11. Even with this loss, the players are proud of what they accomplished this season and are already looking towards next year.

“We definitely came together as a team this season and everyone mostly did their jobs as individuals. We kept our heads up and will work to improve individually and as a team next year,” Klein said.
