Softball team annihilates Walter Johnson 17–4

The girls softball team (7–10) demolished the Walter Johnson Wildcats (3–9) at a score of 17–4 in the first round of playoffs Thursday in an all around dominant performance.

Key hitters such as catcher Margaret Oleynik and center fielder Catherine DiGiammarino secured the lead for the Vikes, each of them crushing line drives straight to the fence. The second inning ended at 6–3, keeping the Vikes confident in the rest of the game.

“We were very patient today,” junior Alyssa Kline said. “We knew that their pitcher was wild and we wanted to make her throw a lot of pitches so we were very selective.”

Pitcher Riley Kuehn led the squad’s defensive efforts, maintaining her focus and whipping out strikes despite the drizzle to hold the Wildcats at just three runs.

The Vikes attacked ferociously, finishing the game out in five innings at a whopping 17–4, an early end due to the mercy rule of leading by 10 runs after five innings. This secures their second playoff game Monday against the Churchill Bulldogs at Churchill.

“We have struggled against Churchill and we need to make sure we are mentally focused and try to stop their big hitters,” Kline said.
