Students plant trees for Earth Day

Instead of just posting a photo on Instagram, some students actively celebrated Earth Day by planting trees by the football stadium.

Macy’s donated three trees as a part of their annual nationwide Earth Day campaign. This year, Whitman was the location selected in this region for the donation, Macy’s Human Resource Manager Julie Bates said.

Principal Alan Goodwin, environmental science and biology teacher Kelly Garton and students from Garton’s third period planted the trees.

“It’s just a nice thing to be able to raise awareness of the environment and just remind people of the simple things,” Garton said.

Bates said she hopes the event will have a positive impact on students beyond Earth Day.

“[I hope the event will] encourage people to be very earth conscious and to make good choices with recycling and different sustainable ways of living.”
