Girls basketball takes division title

Varsity girls basketball beat the Churchill Bulldogs 56-47, February 22, improving to 17-3.

Despite not being able to host senior night, the girl’s basketball team got exactly what they wanted: the win that would make them division champs.

The game started off competitively with neither team gaining a significant lead. Whitman got in foul trouble early with Whitney Kolakowski committing three in the first quarter. After back-and-forth play, the game was tied at halftime.

Early in the third quarter, the Vikings struggled to score and Churchill gained the lead. But, guard Susan Russell set off a spark with two 3-pointers, and the team quickly followed and closed their negative gap.

Mid- fourth quarter, with both teams in foul trouble, the Vikings took back the lead through an impressive free throw percentage. Churchill, on the other hand, struggled to convert on theirs.

With around one minute left, the Vikings proved relentless and improved their winning gap to nine points, taking the division championship title.

Churchill’s junior guard, Ashley Nelson hit an impressive 3-pointer with one minute left, but it was not enough to put them over the Vikings.

Susan Russell finished the game with 18 points, leading all scorers.

The girls will travel to Seneca Valley in an effort to ruin the Screaming Eagle’s undefeated season, Tuesday February 23.
