A day in the life of Andy Wetzel

You’ve all seen him driving his golf cart at football games, but you haven’t seen what athletic director Andy Wetzel does when no one is watching.

5:15 a.m.- Wetzel wakes up and thinks about what he will have to do at work that day.

5:25 a.m.- He begins to take care of his cats, Joy and Granby.

“I have to get out of bed and feed my cats before they drive me nuts,” he says. “If I don’t get up they wake me up by doing laps across my bed.”

6:02 a.m.- Upon his arrival at the school, Wetzel heads to his office in the gym lobby to check his numerous emails and phone messages. The barrage of emails usually comes from other athletic directors or people trying to sell athletic equipment to the school.

6:30 a.m.- Wetzel hangs out in Herbert’s room for an hour. They talk about the last night’s TV shows and discuss the results of sports games. Wetzel brags about beating Herbert at the iPhone Scrabble app and then heads to his classroom in the tech wing to prepare for his second and third period classes.

10:00-10:46 a.m.- Wetzel spends fourth period paying the athletic department’s bills and making financial deposits. He recently paid for new water bottles and dispensers, nets for the gym and boys lacrosse uniforms.

11:37 a.m.-  After finishing the financial work, he answers emails, phone calls and takes care of “any other kind of screwy paperwork” he needs to take care of.

11:37- 12:28 p.m.- Seymour and Wetzel enjoy their lunch break in the gym office.

“He gets lonely if I don’t come in,” Wetzel jokes.

12:28-1:19 p.m.- More paperwork.

“I answer more emails, do more paperwork, and look at random mail things that come in,” he says.

1:19-2:10 p.m.- Depending on the athletic schedule, Wetzel either sets up for games or mingles with coaches.

“It depends on the season,” he says. “If there’s a football game that night, I’ll set up and go around on the golf cart to get stuff together. If nothing’s going on, I’ll socialize with other coaches.”

3:00 p.m.- Wetzel drives home to feed and play with Joy and Granby.

“They mob me as soon as I walk in the door,” he says. “They miss me and want attention.”

After taking care of the cats, Wetzel watches Sports Center and answers emails for a while. Then he occasionally relaxes by playing his Xbox.

“My favorite game is probably Assassin’s Creed 2,” he says. “But I gave it to Herbert because I beat it already. Besides that, I like Modern Warfare 2 and Rock Band. A bunch of coaches get together and play Rock Band sometimes.”

10:00 p.m.- Wetzel gets in bed at 10:00 every night, and is asleep by 10:30.

“I pop in a movie, set the sleep timer and it’s over,” he says. “Fifteen minutes is all it takes before I’m asleep.”
