Viking Vogue: Stay gold

Returning to school is exciting for many reasons, but one of the best is showing off your sun-kissed look. Your hair is blonder, your skin is darker and your spirit is higher.

But as the school year goes on, humidity rises and days become overcast, which can definitely dull your summer look. But just because the sun goes behind the clouds doesn’t mean your glow has to.

The best way to keep your tan is intense moisturization. Healing and hydrating body lotion should be applied daily. St.Ives and Jergens work well, especially post-shower. This will keep your skin nourished and flake-free.

Skin naturally renews itself, and after a few weeks inside classrooms there won’t be much you can do to salvage your original tan. This means you’ve got to overcome your fear of orange streaks and apply self-tanner. Tanning lotion has come a long way since our mother’s horror stories of oompa loompa skin — you’d have to actually try to end up looking like a pumpkin.

But in order to be extra cautious, you can mix your first few applications of self-tanner with your daily moisturizing lotion. The result is a more gradual tan, and you’ll be able to control the shade. If you have fair to medium skin, buy the lotion that corresponds with that tone — don’t kid yourself and buy the medium to dark skin lotion because you’ll just end up yellow. Nivea and Jergens both sell shade selection tanning lotions.

Additionally, wear clothes that contrast nicely with your skin tone, to keep your tan looking sharp. You should always have one bright color or white somewhere in your outfit, whether it’s a bright cardigan, blouse, or colored shorts. Bright and bold colors of nail polish make your hands and feet look tanner than they are.

These three tips along with a healthy diet and exercise will keep your complexion bright and clear, so that you can be a sun-bathed beauty as long as possible.
