Summer hits of 2012

Whether you’re walking to the dining hall at camp, packing up a beach bag or watching Shark Week in your basement, there are always those summer songs that just won’t get out of your head. This summer, at least one of these five songs was never far from earshot.

Summer Hit #1: Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen. Even though this song was the subject of numerous parodies, I can’t recall a summer day that didn’t include its catchy melody. Carly Rae Jepsen’s bubbly voice and her perky chorus left both girls and boys constantly joking, “call me maybe?”

Summer Hit #2: We Are Young by Fun. This song was particularly perfect for any summer night. The chorus was simple enough for everyone to remember and belt out wherever they are. This youth anthem was majorly successful over summer 2k12.

Summer Hit #3: Barefoot Blue Jean Night by Jake Owen. For those of you who’ve never been much of a fan of country music, listen to this song. Its message of care-free summer fun is irresistibly likeable, and since Maryland really is in the South, you can try out your country accent without acting like a southern wannabe.

Summer Hit #4: What Makes You Beautiful by One Direction. While this song is clearly geared more toward the female audience, its message is applicable for anyone who’s ever felt insecure. The constant playing of this song taught girls all over the world that make-up and clothing are trivial, but what’s on the inside matters most.

Summer Hit #5: Boyfriend by Justin Bieber. Whether or not you’re a self-proclaimed Belieber, it was a major feat to avoid singing this song throughout the summer. Bieber’s whispered rap in the beginning of the song, followed by his falsetto chorus of commitment to a dream girlfriend, created an utterly catchy tune that was almost impossible to escape.

These five songs were by far the most popular of summer 2k12. And even if their lyrics may not be the most clever, it’s hard to deny that they’re connected with many fond summer memories.
