As summer draws to a close and students bury their heads in piles of AP World readings and college applications, there’s only one thing that can turn back the clock: deep-fried foods reminiscent of those greasy delights found at carnivals across the country.
These deep-fried oreos and funnel cakes taste just as good as those found at the Montgomery County Fair. Best of all, these delicious snacks are made in the comfort of your home, meaning you can have as many as your arteries can handle.
Ingredients:
2 cups pancake mix (Bisquick, or something similar)
1 cup milk
1 large egg
2 tblsp vegetable oil
Oreos
2 quarts vegetable oil
Procedure:
- Pour about two quarts of vegetable oil into a medium sized pot. The oil should be about midway up the side.
- Measure one cup milk, two cups pancake mix, two tablespoons vegetable oil and one large egg into a bowl.
- Stir until mixture is smooth and thick.
- Wait for oil to reach 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Once the oil reaches that temperature, coat the Oreos in the batter, one at a time. Drop a few at once into the oil. Fry until puffy and golden-brown.
- Remove the Oreos from the oil using a slotted spoon. Let drain on a paper towel on a plate before sprinkling with powdered sugar.
- For the funnel cake, hold a batter-filled metal funnel a few inches above the surface of the oil and let the batter drip in a continuous stream into the oil.
- Let fry until puffy and golden brown. Flip halfway through.
- Take funnel cake out of oil and let drain on a paper towel on a plate. Sprinkle with powdered sugar, and take a trip back to summer.
