Varsity Boys soccer defeated the High Point Eagles 3-2 in the State semifinals, Nov 13, advancing to the Maryalnd 4A championship game.

The Vikings struck early on with a goal from attacker Scott Gerfen, who was assisted by midfielder Sam Lilek. Gerfen got an open look and easily put the ball past High Point’s goalie.

Ten minutes later, High Point countered with a goal of its own after an Eagle attacker cut towards the goal completely unmarked, received a pass and blasted the ball past goalie Zack Khalifa.

With ten minutes left in the half, attacker Jonny Mehrez broke free of Eagle defenders and took a shot on goal. The ball deflected off of a High Point player to Gerfen who got the rebound and scored his second goal of the night.

The boys went into halftime leading 2-1.

The Viking defense held strong in the second half with solid play from Aaron May, Stephen Rodan and Dominick Yin. The team had few offensive chances, playing more of a defensive game.

But, with 18 minutes remaining, High Point scored off of a corner kick.

Finally, just six minutes later, Gerfen broke away from Eagle defenders, carried the ball 30 yards to the goal and faked out the High Point goalie, scoring his third goal of the night.

Gerfen, who has led the team offensively this season, has scored five goals this post-season and has had several assists.

For the remainder of the game, the Vikes denied any chances that High Point had. Khalifa provided a key save late in the game to secure the victory.

The game ended 3-2 as the players stormed the field after the final whistle blew.

The team will play Urbana in the championship game on Nov 20 at the Untiversity of Maryland Baltimore County field, in its first state final match since 2000.
