After a rain-trodden start to the season, the Vikings baseball team played its third game Wednesday night, falling 1-0 to the Sherwood Warriors.

The Vikes’ record fell to 1-2 after the loss while the Warriors’ improved to 3-1.

The game capped a tough week for the Vikings after playing two of the best teams in the county, outfielder Andrew Cashmere said.

It was a hard-fought pitchers’ duel between the two teams, with only six hits combined between them. Center fielder Drew Aherne and third baseman Alex Clark had the Vikings’ only hits.

“Their pitchers’ ability to change speed and location effectively made them really tough,” Cashmere said.

On the other side, pitcher Sam Berson started the game for the Vikings, throwing six strong innings, giving up three hits and one run.

Berson almost got out of the sixth inning unscathed, but a two-out single by Sherwood outfielder Patrick Dunn scored the only run of the game.

During the bottom of the sixth, the Vikes had their best chance to score. Second baseman Ben Castagnetti led off the inning, reaching base on a dropped third strike. After a walk by Aherne, the Vikings had runners on second and third with no outs.

Impressive defense in the later innings kept the Vikings in the game. With two outs in the fifth, a diving catch by Aherne saved a run and got Berson out of a jam. Then, during the seventh, catcher Max Vogel hosed a base runner who was trying to steal second, helping pitcher Max Palermo finish the inning without giving up a run.

The Vikes hope to get back in the win column this Thursday, when they play Richard Montgomery at home.
